Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used screening tool that estimates body fat based on your weight relative to your height. Developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s, it remains one of the most common methods for assessing whether a person has a healthy body weight.
| BMI Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal weight |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight |
| 30.0 and above | Obese |
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it has limitations. It does not distinguish between lean muscle mass and body fat, so athletes or highly muscular individuals may be classified as overweight despite having low body fat. BMI also does not account for fat distribution — visceral fat around the waist poses greater health risks than subcutaneous fat elsewhere. For a complete picture, consider complementary measures like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and consulting a healthcare professional.
